Girls in open-toed shoes and pretty dresses…

YOU, on the other hand, look like a drab pile of gloom.

Spring is here, gentlemen!

Time to shake off the winter blues and dress for it. But how?

A few days ago, a friend asked me the same question:

“Antonio, how can I liven up my spring wardrobe?”

You all know that I’m a classic style guy. I’m not going to answer that question by talking about this season’s trends. Instead, I’ve got 7 timeless items you can add to your wardrobe right now to look great for many springs to come.

Don’t just dust off the same old items you always wear this time of year. Try these fresh choices and put a little…”spring” in your step.

types-of-sunglasses#1. Classic Sunglasses

If you’ve been wearing the same old shades again and again, break the habit this season. Bring in some classic men’s sunglasses like a pair of aviators.

If you don’t want to change the style of your shades, try lenses or frames in a different color. That’s enough of a change for people to notice and admire.

There are many options out there when it comes to sunglasses. Try something new.

Suede Chelsea Boots#2. Boots For Spring

I know a lot of you guys love boots. So do I. I’ve been wearing the same dark leather Chelsea boots pretty much all winter. But now it’s spring, so let’s change it up. Different options abound, so have some fun.

Consider trying the same style you’re used to but in a lighter-colored leather. Bring in something that has a different texture to it. Be brave and give suede a try, maybe even in a bold color like blue.

#3. A Slimmer Wallet

I love my billfold. I’ve had it for years. The trouble is, it’s pretty big. Too big for spring, in fact. Why? Because this time of year it’s often too warm for a jacket. You’ll want a wallet small and slender enough to hide in your back pocket.

When you go with a slim wallet, you have a lot less room, so you’ve got to make the hard choices about what you really do and don’t need. I find that a slim wallet works great for travel. I’m able to manage with much less stuff in there. Sometimes I end up sticking with this for weeks after I return from the trip.

I know a lot of you like to carry a bit more. If the wallet just isn’t enough for your EDC, get your hands on a man bag. I love a weatherproof messenger bag when I’m traveling or running errands around town.

Go with something that’s got a nice strong masculine feel to it. Look for canvas or cotton with a waxed finish to make it waterproof. Leather accents and oversized hardware will make it look more rugged, clearly sending the signal, This ain’t no man purse.”

#5. Men’s Insulated Vests

I don’t know how cold it gets where you live. Here in Wisconsin, temperatures plummet to minus 30, which means that PLUS 30 is actually spring weather to us ‘Sconnies. Once the snow starts to melt, I don’t want to wear a jacket. It’s still a bit chilly, though, so I’ll often throw on an insulated vest instead. It serves the functional purpose of keeping my core warm but also gives the guns freedom of movement.

What I love about insulated vests is that they’re comfortable, practical, and very versatile if you go with a dark color that’s close to your trousers without matching them exactly. I’ve got them in navy blue and forest green. I like keeping the colors solid so that I can wear more colorful shirts, which brings us to the next item on our list…

You can bring a lot of color into your spring wardrobe with shirts. They’re usually not terribly expensive, so you needn’t limit yourself to just one or two.

Start with colors that are new to you. Maybe you wouldn’t normally wear purple, but in a subtle pattern like a micro check I think a lot of men look quite good in this color. Stick with paler shades (lilac or lavender) since it’s spring. If you want a bolder look, this season is the perfect time to wear larger patterns using brighter colors.

Another classic spring color is pink. I think this is an amazing color: more men should wear pink! Be careful with it if you have a reddish complexion: it’ll highlight that. But if you’ve got medium olive-colored skin you may find that pink looks great on you, garnering tons of compliments.

When it comes to shirts, color isn’t the only thing you can experiment with. Why not change up the fabric? Try a Western shirt in denim. Or change the style. Look for something with double-breasted pockets or epaulets for a casual spring look with just a hint of military flair.

#7. Spring Trousers

When spring rolls around, you’ll still want to wear trousers with somewhat heftier fabric. Keep your linen and seersucker pants in storage for another month or two. I have a dark brown pair of brushed cotton trousers that I love this time of year because they go with almost everything in my wardrobe. What sets brushed cotton apart is its texture. It has a nap surface that feels great and also traps air to make it warmer, which is great on those early April days when Old Man Winter still sends a frost.

You also have corduroy as a slightly dressier option. I think more men should embrace corduroy, especially when it comes to trousers. For spring, look for it in tan, olive green, maybe even a lovely royal blue if the occasion suits.

The third and dressiest option is gray flannel slacks. You can dress them up with a sports jacket or down with a sweater, and they’ll look great with every shirt in your wardrobe. Gray is a non-color so it’ll match pretty much anything.

Spring can be an awkward time to dress for because the weather varies so much. Stay warm in chillier weather with a lightweight jacket. If you get too hot, you can just take it off.

Choose something in a unique fabric or color. I have a great suede jacket that you’ve probably seen me wear in videos. Every time I wear this piece, I get tons of compliments. You’ve got to love a lightweight jacket.
