But no one around you does.
In fact – they chastise you for trying.
What do you do?
Not easy?
Afraid of backlash?
You’re not alone – trust me.
I’ve read the comments…
- Friends will make fun of me
- Colleagues will say I’m trying too hard
- No one around me cares
I hear you…
Unfortunately, some people confuse it for:
- Shallowness
- Arrogance
- Going against the “norm”
But don’t let them stop you from becoming the man you’re supposed to be.
So follow these 5 tips on how to dress sharp when no one does.

Tip #1 – Know What You Stand For
Who are you? What do you stand for? How do you see yourself in the future?
How does he dress? How does he behave? If you want to become him you need to practice being him today.
Those are the questions you have to ask – since they’re the key to understanding your image. And once you’ve done it, that becomes the basis for clothing choices.
But it’s not enough just to know yourself. You also need the courage to let your outfit represent you. The courage to stand by what you stand for. Especially when others seem to disapprove.
Imagine this: you’re a frog that’s climbing to the top of a tower – with a crowd of others frogs watching from below. You know how strong you are. But the spectators start shouting “The tower is too high!” or “They can’t do it!” Your fellow climbers weaken and give up…
What happens in the end? One little frog goes all the way – showing no sign of tiredness. He reaches the very top and stuns the crowd. It’s only later that they discover why. He’s deaf.
So which frog were you? One of those being held back by “negative” voices – or that little frog that wasn’t affected by them?
That’s the moral of the story: to succeed at anything, you must block out all the words coming from the wrong people. Either they’re a bit naïve or they’re haters.
Focus instead on your goals (where you want to be next month, or maybe in 10 or 20 years’ time). Envision the person you’ll soon become. That should influence your image – and help you figure out your style.
A suit and tie are NOT always necessary. The point is sending a controlled message about yourself. If you’re a lawyer at a construction firm, don’t you want to be perceived as a lawyer – not a construction worker? So the type of uniform plays a part.
Tip #2 – Mind The Small Details
When it comes to style, the smallest details can make a huge difference.
If you’ve ever heard of the “black spot” experiment – it accurately describes how most of us look at things.
A small dark circle will pop out against a white background. And almost all of us will just notice the circle and not the 99% whiteness.
So with your outfit, remember that people’s eyes will be drawn to any “black spots” if they exist. It could be a literal spot (or stain) on the side of your pants.
It could be clothes that aren’t hemmed properly or need slight adjustments. Or something more obvious and common – like a “muffin top” shirt!
Yes, many guys can get a billowing shirt after a long day at the office. They would think it’s not that big of a deal. But why join the club?
Why not find a real fix for this issue? Why not take care of the little things – and commit to an excellent style? That’s how you can truly impress people who matter.
And I know the best solution to a billowing shirt – KK & Jay.
I’ve used KK & Jay shirt stays for over 4 years, and they still do wonders for my outfits these days. I may not chase after people like policemen do, or march like I did in the military. But I love how my shirt remains tailor-fit regardless of how active I am. And you’ll feel the same (even with an office job).

Tip #3 – Aim For Understated Elegance
The sharpest-looking men usually don’t wear anything flashy or extreme.
They’re just wise enough to select the best quality for each part of their ensemble.
So function + style is crucial. If an item wears down soon (or the leather doesn’t get better over time), that means it’s low-quality.
Each item needs the right build – so that it feels great to have all the time. Other people will take notice and compliment you on it.
Two of the things that can make or break the “understated elegance” in your outfit are:
- Ideally made of suede, full-grain or top-grade leather (which lasts many years, retains shine well, and requires minimal waxing or polishing)
- Soles that are designed with either Blake or Goodyear welting (to maintain flexibility and prevent any foot injuries)
- The best kind is a full-grain leather bag (which retains its quality after several years and develops a nice patina) – as it needs very little maintenance
- Handles are attached through metal fixtures or reinforced stitching
Tip #4 – Practice Wearing What You Want
It takes a while to fully develop your personal style. So what’s to keep you from starting now?
Again – those “negative” voices aren’t worth your concern. Those people don’t care about you.
They might raise eyebrows at your choices at first. But they’ll soon get used to it and move on.
They’re more concerned with themselves – and they should be! It only makes sense for them to “obsess” over your style if it visibly hurts your ego.
So keep wearing whatever you like that fits right and feels right. Be proud of it every time.
If you get stared at for the wrong reasons, turn the tables around and give them that “I don’t care” attitude. It can make them think they have misguided views – especially as you wear the same stuff consistently.
Adjust your wardrobe based on your age – aligning it with your goals. Maybe you’ve entered the tech industry and you want to reach out to younger guys. Or maybe you’re meeting with older men to have them invest in your company.
Control your image to earn the respect of those who matter. That’s how more opportunities will come your way.
Tip #5 – It’s Okay To Change It Up
It does take some courage and self-esteem to stand out stylishly. But there’s one more ingredient:
Remember it’s absolutely OKAY to be stylish.
Yes, fashion is important – but it’s not a matter of life and death in the end.
You may feel like trying new things for a change. That’s fine. It won’t lead to serious consequences (unless you’re violating a dress code).
Go ahead and experiment. You might realize certain advantages with the new style compared to before. Or you might like how refreshing it looks.
That was the case for Chris Hemsworth – when he had his long blonde locks trimmed off for Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok (coming out later this year).
The trailers have disappointed (and even outraged) fans who don’t like Thor’s new haircut. But Chris enjoyed the change – saying it was sort of a “rebirth” for his role and a new challenge as an actor.
Embrace your individuality. Feel free to try different men’s hairstyles or color combinations. Have that sense of fun and creativity.
The worst-case scenario – if something doesn’t work, you can simply go back to what does. And at least it makes another dent on your trial-and-error record.
